Canada Day

What I Did

  • Writing
  • Filming
  • Narration
  • Editing/post-production
  • Music composition/production

What I Used

  • Panasonic DMC-GH3
  • Camera Motion Research Blackbird Camera Stabilizer
  • SLR Magic Hyperprime 12mm f/1.6
  • Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95
  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Ableton Live
  • Spitfire Audio libraries

This early attempt at short lyrical filmmaking taught me something valuable. Combined with narrative and music, even rough footage can be elevated. If there’s the outline of a story, your viewer won’t care about sensor noise or whether you nailed exposure in every shot. If you lose yourself in the making of something, it signals that others might suspend their disbelief and embrace what you’ve created.

Canada Day

The wind shifted through rakish aspens
as the ringlet loosed itself from her fingers and fell

We shambled under the twilight
spinning arcs of yellow light

Riotous streaks held against the concrete gloom

Waiting on the bridge deck
we leaned against all the times before

Circles of clipped highlight turning as afterglow

The chain-link shadows
were cast across huddled strangers in the dark
as the distance closed

And through the fence
there was light
