I’m not sure why it took me four years to craft these two minutes. I guess when you set out to make a mood piece about time, you’re subject to all sorts of irony. This is a goodbye to a friend that I will never be finished making.

An appreciated and pithy assessment of this work appeared recently on this excellent blog.

A Shortened Infinity

This is already gone
the images passed before my eyes
made memory in movement
across curved glass and through pixel infinity

This boy will not last
nor will his summer of rockets and sand
fireworks and waves

A reminder and churning
of change already arrived

I seek a fool’s perfection
in that which does not permit
and so scatters like sparks over dark water
showing me
again and again
that I cannot capture the world

It passes through me
and all understanding
as ones closest
have done the same
into the greater silence
of our own unmaking

A reminder and churning

A wordless flight
into the distant light of fall
that recasts our history
of unrecorded truths
into something unknown
but somehow better

And so summer is ended before it began
preceding even us

It passes through me
and all understanding
like words unconnected to image
and love in a storm of memory
